In today's Desert Sun... This lovely piece of information, "But some job-seekers say that well-paying positions remain hard to find for skilled, experienced professionals in their 50s, 60s and 70s...Until the valley gets the more diversified economy that it is seeking - through programs like the Coachella Valley Economic Partnership's just-started Career Pathways program - experts say older workers will need to find ways to make current offerings work for them."

Guess I'll have to be a greeter at Wal-Mart. However, I think I'd rather stay involved in libraries in some way.

Today, I did my usual PR stuff at a groundbreaking for a new library in Harvard. They are going to be restoring and adding an addition on to a fabulous Victorian red brick school. What an incredible building. It was sunny but rather chilly in the 40s, but a very nice crowd showed up. I introduced the folks from our office to the other dignitaries there, and took some great photos of the event. It is really wonderful to see these small communities work so very hard to come up with the money to build libraries for their towns that are going to serve them for many years to come. This project is one I certainly hope to be able to see completed before I move to California. The meeting room is going to be one grand space with vaulted ceilings and lots of original magnificent moldings and wood.

The other highlight of the day was going to see "The Dying Gaul" with my spouse at the Kendall Square Cinema. Very dark movie that left me cold. The two guys in the film took such advantage of each other, and the wife of the film producer has to manipulate the whole affair. Yuck. They all seemed like villans.

More about this blog

Ok... some more. Whenever folks ask me if I am retiring and moving to Palm Springs, I always say no, I am beginning a new "chapter" in my life. Although I will have a pension, no way could I live the way that I am used to or even want to on that income alone. So what will I do in Palm Springs? Well I don't know. My whole career has been spent in public relations - mostly for health care, hospitals, health care firms, department of public health, etc., but the last few years working with the state library agency in Massachusetts. This has really been fun and I have learned a lot about the world of libraries and librarians. They are fun, inquisitive, quirky, eager to learn, as well as bookish, whinny and wishing for the old days.

So where does that leave me? Who knows? The next few months will be an exploration to find out what is happening in the Palm Springs area and go searching for my next adventure. Any ideas would be most welcome.

The Beginning

Why am I doing this? Today I attended a conference session at the Massachusetts Library Association Conference in Lowell, Massachusetts, on Blogging. I found it exciting and decided to give it a try.

2003
In May of that year, my partner and I bought a condo in Palm Springs with the idea that we would move to the desert full-time sometime in 2007. We spent several months remodeling the condo and furnishing it. By December it was finished and we spent our Christmas & New Year's holiday there. Since then we have rented it during the high season and then gone back to enjoy the Coachella Valley several times each year.
